We are about to start work on the replacement of our three cremators at The Chilterns Crematorium. The project involves the replacement of the cremators and abatement plant plus associated enabling construction works. These works will enable the crematorium to continue to provide a high-quality cremation service with the added benefits of larger cremators and improved environmental performance.
We are also taking the opportunity to refurbish the Hampden Chapel providing more comfortable seating whilst retaining its traditional feel, updating the staff welfare facilities as well as providing electric vehicle charging points in our carparks.
The Chilterns Crematorium is one of the busiest crematoria in the country and our current three cremators were installed in 1996/7 and have annually accommodated over 3,000 cremations a year. The cremators have carried out well in excess of 70,000 cremations during their working life but are now at a point where it is crucial that we replace them to ensure that we can continue to provide a good service for our customers and the local community.
The replacement project will run from June 2022 until March 2023 and if you are visiting The Chilterns during this time then you may see our construction and equipment partners on the site. In June they will start to set up site management facilities at the back of the overflow carpark and we will also be partitioning off part of the Hampden Chapel Flower Tribute area to provide essential direct access to the Crematory. You may have already seen scaffold erected to the chimney and over the course of the project temporary chimney stacks will also be erected.
Throughout the project planning our focus has been to ensure that we can continue to operate throughout the replacement works and to reduce any disruption to our users. To achieve this some of the work will be carried out overnight and at weekends. This means the crematorium will be open as usual with only occasional weekend closures. The Hampden Chapel will be unavailable for a short period later in the year when the refurbishment works are carried out.
Our construction partners understand the importance of reducing any impacts to users of the crematorium. However, should you have any concerns or if you would like any more information about the project at any stage, please do get in touch.
